football concussion

Recently, there has been a lot of attention focused on concussions and their long term effects.  A concussion is a form of a brain injury and while understanding and awareness of the gravity of concussions has greatly improved, these neurologic conditions continue to be commonly undiagnosed, overlooked, and under-treated.  Unlike external injuries which are easy to see, the physical sequelae of a concussion exists internally and the damage that has occurred may not be evident immediately or at all.  An individual does not need to lose consciousness to have suffered a concussion and experience various potential physical, emotional, and mental complications (Signs/Symptoms of a Concussion).

As with any injury, chemical changes known as inflammation occur and an increased demand for energy is placed on the body to allow healing to begin, however symptoms of and recovery from concussions vary greatly from one individual to another.  While a broken bone can be set in a cast to heal, brain activity occurs twenty four hours a day, seven days a week creating a challenge to achieve adequate healing.  Proper diagnosis and care for brain injuries is required to identify what activities are safe and appropriate for each individual to minimize any severe long term cognitive and/or neurological symptoms.

  • Functional and coordination retraining

Brain injuries are a serious matter.  At Total Physical Therapy, we understand the importance of individualized care for all of our clients and there is no greater need for customized treatment than for rehabilitation after an injury to your brain–the part that makes you who you are.  While neurologic testing and many treatment options may be available to scholastic athletes, brain injuries can occur at any stage of life and a busy athletic training room can be a bustling, overwhelming environment.  Our clinicians conduct baseline testing for individuals of all ages and activity levels to establish “normal” neurologic function prior to injury which can help prevent a missed diagnosis after brain injury.  Additionally, we offer in-home sessions for individuals who are unable to drive due to dizziness, lack of concentration, or nausea as well as for those easily over-stimulated by a busy environment.  Call us to find out more about our concussion care.
